Filaments as Possible Signatures of Magnetic Field Structure in Planetary Nebulae
We draw attention to the extreme filamentary structures seen in
high-resolution optical images of certain planetary nebulae. We determine the
physical properties of the filaments in the nebulae IC 418, NGC 3132, and NGC
6537, and based on their large length-to-width ratios, longitudinal coherence,
and morphology, we suggest that they may be signatures of the underlying
magnetic field. The fields needed for the coherence of the filaments are
probably consistent with those measured in the precursor circumstellar
envelopes. The filaments suggest that magnetic fields in planetary nebulae may

Networks and regional economic growth: a spatial analysis of knowledge ties
In recent years, increased attention has been given to role of inter-organisational knowledge networks in promoting regional economic growth. Nevertheless, the empirical evidence base concerning the extent to which inter-organisational knowledge networks influence regional growth is at best patchy. This paper utilises a panel data regression approach to undertake an empirical analysis of economic growth across regions of the UK. Drawing on the concept of network capital, significant differences in the stocks of network capital and flows of knowledge within and across regions are found, which are significantly associated with regional rates of economic growth. The analysis finds that both inter- and intra-regional networks shape regional growth processes, highlighting the role of both embedded localised linkages and the importance of accessing more geographically distant knowledge. The study adds weight to the suggestion that one of the most interesting implications of endogenous growth theory relates to the impact of the spatial organisation of regions on flows of knowledge. It is concluded that the adoption of a relational approach to understanding differing economic geographies indicates that network systems are a key component of the regional development mix

Zeta-Functions for Non-Minimal Operators
We evaluate zeta-functions at for invariant non-minimal
2nd-order vector and tensor operators defined on maximally symmetric even
dimensional spaces. We decompose the operators into their irreducible parts and
obtain their corresponding eigenvalues. Using these eigenvalues, we are able to
explicitly calculate for the cases of Euclidean spaces and
-spheres. In the -sphere case, we make use of the Euler-Maclaurin formula
to develop asymptotic expansions for the required sums. The resulting

VLA Observations of H I in the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293)
We report the detection of 21-cm line emission from H I in the planetary
nebula NGC 7293 (the Helix). The observations, made with the Very Large Array,
show the presence of a ring of atomic hydrogen that is associated with the
outer portion of the ionized nebula. This ring is most probably gas ejected in
the AGB phase that has been subsequently photodissociated by radiation from the
central star. The H I emission spreads over about 50 km/s in radial velocity.
The mass in H I is approximately 0.07 solar masses, about three times larger
than the mass in molecular hydrogen and comparable with the mass in ionized

Jets and the shaping of the giant bipolar envelope of the planetary nebula KjPn 8
A hydrodynamic model involving cooling gas in the stagnation region of a
collimated outflow is proposed for the formation of the giant parsec-scale
bipolar envelope that surrounds the planetary nebula KjPn 8. Analytical
calculations and numerical simulations are presented to evaluate the model. The
envelope is considered to consist mainly of environmental gas swept-up by
shocks driven by an episodic, collimated, bipolar outflow. In this model, which
we call the ``free stagnation knot'' mechanism, the swept-up ambient gas
located in the stagnation region of the bow-shock cools to produce a high
density knot. This knot moves along with the bow-shock. When the central
outflow ceases, pressurization of the interior of the envelope stops and its
expansion slows down. The stagnation knot, however, has sufficient momentum to
propagate freely further along the axis, producing a distinct nose at the end
of the lobe. The model is found to successfully reproduce the peculiar shape

3-D Photoionization Structure and Distances of Planetary Nebulae II. Menzel 1
We present the results of a spatio-kinematic study of the planetary nebula
Menzel 1 using spectro-photometric mapping and a 3-D photoionization code. We
create several 2-D emission line images from our long-slit spectra, and use
these to derive the line fluxes for 15 lines, the Halpha/Hbeta extinction map,
and the [SII] line ratio density map of the nebula. We use our photoionization
code constrained by these data to derive the three-dimensional nebular
structure and ionizing star parameters of Menzel 1 by simultaneously fitting
the integrated line intensities, the density map, and the observed morphologies
in several lines, as well as the velocity structure. Using theoretical
evolutionary tracks of intermediate and low mass stars, we derive a mass for
the central star of 0.63+-0.05 Msolar. We also derive a distance of 1050+_150

We must become gatekeepers : editing indigenous writing
With the proliferation of Indigenous texts currently published by specialist and mainstream publishers, non-Indigenous editors increasingly find themselves negotiating the uncomfortable territories of race, politics and power for which current training (in an Australian context) leaves them poorly prepared. Indigenous writer Anita Heiss advocates the employment of Indigenous editors as an \u27ideal\u27 solution, though few are currently working in the Australian industry. Margaret McDonell, an experienced non-Indigenous editor of Indigenous texts, suggests non-Indigenous editors need to \u27undertake a journey of learning\u27 during which \u27assumptions, biases, tastes and preconceptions\u27 are examined. Yet this presents a difficult task within a postcolonial society, when, as identified by Clare Bradford, even the classification of texts into genres such as fiction and the short story represents an entirely Eurocentric construct, \u27not readily correspond[ing] with Aboriginal schemata\u27. The Australian Society of Authors\u27 discussion paper \u27Writing about Indigenous Australia: Some Issues to Consider and Protocols to Follow\u27 provides practical guidelines that may be adapted for editorial use. This article canvasses these and other ideas with a focus on establishing an ethical and appropriately sensitive cross-cultural approach to editing Indigenous writing.<br /
Analytical Estimate of the Critical Velocity for Vortex Pair Creation in Trapped Bose Condensates
We use a modified Thomas-Fermi approximation to estimate analytically the
critical velocity for the formation of vortices in harmonically trapped BEC. We
compare this analytical estimate to numerical calculations and to recent
experiments on trapped alkali condensates.Comment: 12 page
Entropy-driven phase transition in a system of long rods on a square lattice
The isotropic-nematic (I-N) phase transition in a system of long straight
rigid rods of length k on square lattices is studied by combining Monte Carlo
simulations and theoretical analysis. The process is analyzed by comparing the
configurational entropy of the system with the corresponding to a fully aligned
system, whose calculation reduces to the 1D case. The results obtained (1)
allow to estimate the minimum value of k which leads to the formation of a
nematic phase and provide an interesting interpretation of this critical value;
(2) provide numerical evidence on the existence of a second phase transition
(from a nematic to a non-nematic state) occurring at density close to 1 and (3)
allow to test the predictions of the main theoretical models developed to treat
